Gravure Printing: Definition, Process, and Applications

Gravure printing, also known as rotogravure printing, is a high-quality printing process that uses engraved cylinders to transfer ink onto materials such as plastic films, paper, or foil. It is widely used in the packaging industry due to its ability to deliver consistent, high-resolution results across long production runs.

How Gravure Printing Works

In gravure printing, the image is engraved into a metal cylinder as thousands of tiny cells. These cells hold ink and determine how much ink is transferred during printing. The cylinder rotates in an ink bath, filling the cells with ink. A doctor blade then removes excess ink from the surface, leaving ink only inside the engraved cells.

When the substrate comes into contact with the cylinder, the ink is transferred, creating the printed image. The material then passes through drying units before continuing to the next color station.

Why Gravure Printing Matters

Gravure printing is known for its exceptional print quality and consistency. It is especially effective for high-volume production, where maintaining color accuracy across millions of units is critical. While initial setup costs are higher compared to other printing methods, the cost per unit becomes very efficient for long runs.
